WTC, August 1974
This is Philippe Petit. In August 1974, he strung a wire between the nearly-finished WTC towers and spent 45 minutes walking between the two. He knelt on the wire. He lay down on it and "had a dialogue with a seagull." Yesterday a friend let me tag along to an interview with Petit up in Shokan, NY. He has a practice wire rigged in his yard next to a kid's jungle gym. There is a big hole out back; he's putting in a pool behind his modest but beautiful cabin. When my friend asked him what the dialogue with the seagull was about, he said, more or less, that he was thinking of the eagle eating Prometheus' liver, and that the seagull surely had many friends, and that he (Petit) needed to convince the seagull and his minions not to attack. He was sure the seagull was thinking, 'Who is this ugly, black, featherless bird invading my space?' Petit tried to communicate that he was only passing through, that he meant no harm. The bird flew away and Petit did a few more crossings before surrenduring to the NYPD.
See "Man on Wire," a great documentary about Petit and the crew of weirdos who helped him pull off the walk.
